The Weekly Quickie: X-Japan, VIRULENT, Nihilizm, Matenrou Opera, REIGN, Synk;yet, Arlequin

I'd like to start this week off with a good mystery.  X-Japan drummer, Yoshiki, has the jrock world all stirred up again with a mysterious tweet in which he asked his followers what festival they liked.  He mentioned several in the tweet, such as Summer Sonic, Fuji Rock and A-Nation and gave fans the opportunity to voice their opinion.  Could this mean there's a festival in X-Japan's future? Probably not, but it's fun to dream.

Get Bitten at Rockville 2015

Monster Energy is kicking of it's World's Loudest Month festival series with Welcome to Rockville in Jacksonville, Florida's Metropolitan Park on April 25-26.  They will be hosting an all-star lineup of heavy rock acts including Slipknot, Korn, Godsmack, Marilyn Manson, Slayer, Ministry and many, many more.  Beyond music, the festival features autograph signings, interactive experiences and a Monster Energy VIP area including beverage sampling and exclusive gourmet food options.

Speaking of unique experiences, Welcome to Rockville has added Tequila World to this year's festival.  This area features a Mexican fiesta theme, serving a wide range of tequilas, margaritas and tacos, as well as performances from Metalachi, the world's first and only heavy metal mariachi band.  Admission to this area is free to festival goers 21 and up.

All this is well and good, but this is a Jrock blog.  Why do we care?  Because, in addition to an already epic lineup, Japanese superstars VAMPS will be crossing the ocean to rock the stage!  Hyde and KAZ will be bringing Sex, Blood and Rock and Roll to all three Monster events, Welcome to Rockville, Fort Rock and Rock on the Range.  So, mark your calendars, Bloodsuckers.  This is an opportunity you don't want to miss.

Tickets for all events are currently in presale and prices go up the closer we get to the event, so don't wait. Check the links below for details and ticketing information.

Hey, Do You Know: DADAROMA?

This weeks band was suggested to me by one of our staff. This band has completely shattered my expectation in music, they are insanely amazing. They have completely blown my mind; this has not happened in a long time. So let me introduce you to the band that has accomplished this: DADAROMA!! You may recognize some of the members.

I really love Yoshiatsu's vocal range, it's very impressive. So far I LOVE everything on their YouTube channel, there's noway I can choose just one song. I LOVE how hardcore they go in their pv, it just makes me want to wild and head bang along with them. They just had their first anniversary one man live on Jan 11. Watch their OHP for more coming up! You guys DEFINITELY need to check this band out, they're so worth it!

世界のみんなさん、おはようございます!あけましておめでとう。It's great to be back on the radio.
Shibuya Crossing is back for an all new season - and will be expanding to two hours!

Testing out an all new set of covers. This time, we're playing it by theme - and a new one every week.

Fittingly enough - this week, we're calling this a "Homecoming".

By far, the best - and perhaps most convenient - spot for friends to meet up is at the famous Hachiko Square in the heart of Shibuya, in Tokyo, as showcased in our cover art.

More on tomorrow's show, Wednesday, January 21 from 2 to 4pm EST (UTC-5) on CJLO. Online, on demand, and on the AM radio in Montreal at 1690AM.

An Update For NMFT 7!

NMFT 7 in June or July.

An update straight from Steve himself:

The reason why I’ve always held NMFT in May or October is because it’s still relatively warm in Canada and airfare is at its cheapest.

HOWEVER, since the price of oil is currently low it’s actually quite affordable to fly between Canada and Japan in June and July as well (prices shoot up again in August).

NMFT7 was originally set for May 15 – 20 but the band otori wouldn’t be able to make these dates sooooo…

I’m going to try and organize something ASAP for either June or July, 2015.

View the whole post, as well as band info on his website here! You know you're looking forward to it!

Review: Haruka - ANTHEMS

The Band: If you read our latest Band Feature, then you already know a little about Haruka. As a girl, she started her training in classical piano, but soon realized she wanted something more. In 2008, she released her first single with Pony Canyon, but she found even that too constraining and soon struck out on her own. Last year, she started her own record label, CLUB DISORDER, and released her first full-length album, ANTHEMS, just this October.

Dan's Pick "Royz"

So, all December I had no internet... Hence the lack of last month's pick.
I hope this makes up for it, though!

For this month's pick, I've chosen Royz' new release, Supernova!! And for good reason.
This is a fun, poppy blast of energy and flashiness in typical Royz fashion. I can't even choose which aspect of this song I like most, because I enjoy every part of it so much! The guitars, bass, drums, vocals, GANG VOCALS, the whole shebang. I do like the variety in the song. For example, the way it goes from the spacey, pop style into a faster, heavier bit, then into a pop-punk part. It is definitely my favorite song since Lilia. I feel like they just keep getting better and better with each new song.

There is one thing that bums me out about this song:  it's their first release without their other guitarist, Kazuki. Kazuki and the band announced his departure in May of 2014, when Kazuki chose to leave to take care of his mother. Royz as a band isn't a stranger to being a 4 piece, however. They started with just Subaru (vocals), Kazuki (guitar), Koudai (bass), and Tomoya (drums) in 2009. Then in 2010, Kuina (guitar) joined making them a 5 piece band. They had agreed that if one were to leave the band, Royz would separate. But thankfully, Subaru, Kuina, Koudai, and Tomoya decided it was better to continue to make music together.

I'm excited to see how they progress as a 4 piece. I think this is evidence that they will do pretty well.

Artist Feature: Haruka

Look out, girls!  Singer-songwriter and guitarist, Haruka, is ready to make her mark on the world!  She released her first single, Mune ni Kibō o, in 2008 under Pony Canyon, which was subsequently used as the opening theme for their anime series, Blue Dragon.  Last year, she decided to take matters into her own hands and started her own label, CLUB DISORDER, through which she released her latest album, ANTHEMS, just this October.  She was kind enough to take the time to talk with us about the challenges of being a female musician, starting her own label, and, of course, her plans for world domination.  Check the digest video for her album below and the interview after the break.
